Senior Gabe Koontz placed 5th in the state championship for wrestling on February 21st at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Koontz finished off his senior year with a record of 46-2 and had an overall record of 151-26 throughout all four years of his high school wrestling career. Koontz will continue his wrestling career next year as a freshman at Indiana University.
Q: How does it feel to go to the state championship?
A: It’s definitely a great experience but it was a little nerve-wracking. I like a big stage to perform on so it was fun.
Q: What has been so special about your senior year?
A: The fact that I was built up to be good all year, I think I did I well. The good thing about my senior year, even though it’s over, is that I still have a future in wrestling.
Q: What was it like to be in the moment of being one step closer to a state title?
A: In the moment it was a little nerve-wracking but it was still pretty awesome just to be there.
Q: How high were the emotions during your journey to the state championship?
A: They were pretty high. It was a little frustrating but it took a lot of hard work, but looking back at it I wish I had another shot.
