The American Valentine’s Day Sweet-Tooth

By Michal MacMorran, sophomore

Candy is one of the most popular gifts given on Valentine’s Day, followed by cards, flowers, and jewelry. These statistics put that fact into perspective:

  • According to the Huffington Post, Valentine’s Day spendings are expected to reach $18.6 billion this year. On average, Americans are expected to spend $130.97 this holiday.
  • “More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day.” –About Food
  • “About 8 billion hearts will be produced this year; that’s enough candy to stretch from Rome, Italy to Valentine, Arizona 20 times and back again.” -About Food

Valentine’s Day has a candy selection that anyone can enjoy, whether you prefer decadent truffles or Conversation Hearts. Weight conscious individuals can also enjoy a low-fat yet still sinful treat for the holiday: chocolate-dipped strawberries have become increasingly popular. Not a chocoholic? Even Krispy Kreme donuts are spreading the love with their heart-shaped and festively decorated donuts, which will began selling on January 26 and will end on February 15.

So with all of this in mind, what would you most like to receive this Valentine’s Day to satisfy your sweet-tooth?
